Last updated 1999/6/17 Follow these instructions to obtain a password override for your PortMaster(R). You must reboot your PortMaster as part of this process, but it will be offline for less than a minute. 1. Using a null modem cable, connect a terminal to the console port on your PortMaster. For all Office Router, IRX(TM), and PortMaster 2 products, use port S0. For all other products, use port C0. 2. Set the terminal for 9600 baud, 8 bits, no parity (N), 1 stop bit, and software flow control (XON/XOFF). 3. Turn DIP switch 1 up (or to the left on the PortMaster 4) to set the S0 or C0 port to diagnostic mode: - On the PortMaster 4, the DIP switches are located on the system manager module between Ether1 and Ether0. Turn DIP switch 1 (the bottom switch) to the left. - On all other PortMaster products, the DIP switches are located on the back of the PortMaster. Turn DIP switch 1 (the leftmost DIP switch) to the up position. 4. Turn the power off and back on. The console displays various diagnostic messages, ending with "PortMaster console login:". If the console does not display "PortMaster console login:" when you boot it with the console enabled, call Lucent Remote Access Technical Support at 800-458-9966 or 925-737-2100, or send email to support@livingston.com. 5. Log in as "!root" with the password "override". The PortMaster displays a challenge string. 6. Send email to override@livingston.com with the 16-character challenge -- and nothing else -- in the body of the message. Do not use MIME encoding. Be careful to distinguish between the letter O and the number 0 as well as the letter I and the number 1. Do NOT do anything else at the login prompt until you get a return email with a response string. 7. When you receive an email with the response string, log in as "!root" and enter the response string as the password. The Command> prompt appears. 8. Use the "set password" command to change the password, and enter "save all" to save the new password. 9. Put the console DIP switch down (or to the right on the PortMaster 4). 10. If the override password does not work, try the new password two more times. Be very careful about the similarities between the letter O vs. the number 0 and the letter I vs. the number 1. 11. If you encounter problems, contact Lucent Remote Access Technical Support on Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. U.S. Pacific Time, at 1-800-458-9966 or 1-925-737-2100 and ask for a "password override." Thank you. -- Lucent Remote Access Technical Support support@livingston.com
