Multi-Tech Systems 7/17/01 How to set up a Multi-Tech Modem for Macintosh ---------------------------------------------- Multi-Tech external modems will work with a Macintosh, although some modems will require special programming to work properly. All of our modems require the use of a Hardware Handshake modem cable. Near the middle of this document is information on what you need to do to use Apple Remote Access with a Multi-Tech modem. There is also information on setting up and configuring MacPPP. Powerbook users will want to read the section on the "LT Modem and the Powerbook". The Cable --------- The pin-outs for the cable to be used on a Macintosh are shown below Mac 8-pin Modem 25-pin 1 ----- RTS -----> 4 2 <---- CTS ------ 5 3 ----- XMT -----> 2 4 & 8 ---- Ground ---- 7 5 <---- RCV ------ 3 6 NOT USED 6 7 <----- CD ------ 8 Note that this cable does not tie anything to DTR on the modem. DTR is required on the modem to work properly. DTR needs to be set for "ignored". See below. Modem Setup ----------- If you have a ZDX modem, you will either need to set an initialization string permanently into the modem, or insert the following commands into the initialization string of the software packages you are using. Permanent change: AT&F&D0&E13&F9&W This string makes the modem Ignore DTR and stores it into the modem as the factory default setting. (&E13&F9 are not used by some modems, see models below) String Change: &D0&E13 Add these commands to any existing string in the software package you are using (if they are not already there). If you have a BA/BL modem, or an older V32 or 2400 baud modem, do the same commands as above and/or make sure the Dip Switch (switch #1) is in the "DTR Forced" position on the modem. Forcing DTR will allow you to use your modem without entering command strings. Apple Remote Access (ARA) ------------------------- To use ARA with a Multi-Tech modem you will need the script file. The file you need is located on the Multi-Tech website. MacPPP ------ The proper initialization string for MacPPP for all Multi-Tech modems is: AT&F&D0&E13 NOTE: The MT5600 series, MT2834ZDXb-u (MT5634ZDX), MT3334ZDX, and MT5634 series modems are the newer models that do not use &E13 or &F9. These are the modems refered to earlier. Be sure to set the port speed in the software to match the SERIAL SPEED of the modem. The chart below shows the serial speed you should choose for your specific modem. Modem Speed ----- ----- 2400 Baud 9600 v32 9600 932BA 38400 All other BA/BL 57600 5600/5634 57600 LT Modem (PCMCIA) and the Powerbook ----------------------------------- The Multi-Tech PCMCIA modems (MT2834LT and MT1432LT) will work without any special modification with older Powerbooks such as the 500 series. Special firmware is required for use with 5300 Series Powerbooks or newer. The special firmware is required because the Powerbook cannot properly identify the modem with the standard firmware. The firmware is actually "Flash" upgradeable. The modem must be "flashed" on a PC, however. The modem can also be sent to Multi-Tech to be flashed. Please call Multi-Tech Support before flashing or sending any modem in to be flashed. See Macflash.txt for notes on flashing. There are now newer PCMCIA models available. The ZLX line of modems are not supported for Macintosh at this time. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Multi-Tech Systems 1-800-972-2439 or (763) 785-3500 www.multitech.com support@multitech.com ------------------
