Installing Newt 4.6 under Windows 95 8-12-96 ------------------------------------ IMPORTANT: If you have already tried to install Newt and the Multi- CommManager software and it has failed, you will want to completely remove your prior installation. 1. Remove MultiCommManager software. Delete the Folder containing the MCM software icons. Run a DOS Window CD\ Deltree the directory where MRack software was installed (default would be: deltree mrack) 2. Remove Newt software Delete the Folder containing the Newt software icons Run a DOS Window CD\ Deltree the directory where Newt software was installed (default would be: deltree netmanag) 3. "Clean Up" the AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS and WIN.INI files Use a text editor (NOTEPAD or DOS EDIT) Edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file Remove the "REM" statements that were added by NetManage and the appropriate lines that the "REM" statements refer to. (e.g.: c:\netmanag\nmodi c:\netmanag\netbind share) Edit the CONFIG.SYS file Remove the PROTMAN.DOS and NETMANAG.DOS lines that may have been added. Edit the WIN.INI file In your text editor Search for "NETMAN" You will then find a "[TCPIP]" section that was added by newt. Delete the entire "[TCPIP]" section. That is all that needs to be removed to clean out the prior Newt and MCM installation. Reboot your PC. I. Start out by checking your Win95 Network Settings ------------------------------------------------------------ 1. If you are currently using a TCP/IP stack in Win95 (the Microsoft TCP/IP Stack, for example), you can use that stack for SNMP. 2. Go to CONTROL PANEL/NETWORKS and double-click on the TCP/IP Protocol 3. Get your PC's IP address from the next screen. We now want to test your current TCP/IP configuration using the "PING" utility that comes with Win95. 4. Open a DOS Window. Type: PING Use any IP that is located out on your network and ping it. (e.g.: My Ethernet Controller is 132.160.142.100 so I would type: ping 132.160.142.100) You will then get received packet times (4 attempts) or an error. 5. You should also PING your local PC to check that it's IP is working. 6. If you get no error, then TCP/IP is functioning. If TCP/IP is not functioning, you should work on getting Win95 configured and "pinging" with Microsoft drivers. Note: This has only been tested using the 32-bit NDIS drivers supplied with Win95 and with the released Novel 32-bit Client. ODI drivers have not been tested at this point in time. II. Installing Newt 4.6 for Windows 95 (Supervisor) --------------------------------------- Go to START/RUN and run the installation program for Newt. The first screen that pops up mentions the Win95 TCP/IP stack. Just continue on with the installation. For simplicity sake you may just want to install to the default directory (C:\NETMANAG), but this is not required, of course. You now need to configure Newt. There is a *trick* here that was learned from an ISP that has configured Newt 4.6 and Win95 many times successfully. Follow each step very closely: 1. Run the "Custom" utility contained in the Newt Program Group. 2. Go to Interface/Add 3. Ethernet0 is fine, click OK 4. Go to File/Save (do not set up any IP addresses in Custom) 5. Make sure the new Ethernet0 interface is highlighted. Go to Interface/Delete (we are essentially making a blank configuration file by doing the Add and the Delete operation) 6. Choose File/Save to save your changes. 7. Exit from Custom. You will now need to examine the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files. 1. Edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file 2. There should be two statements added (in addition to the REMarks) 3. Delete the NETBIND statement 4. Leave the SHARE statement the way it is. 5. Save AUTOEXEC.BAT 6. Edit CONFIG.SYS 7. There should be two new DEVICE statements: DEVICE=C:\NETMANAG\PROTMAN.DOS /I:C:\WINDOWS DEVICE=C:\NETMANAG\NETMANAG.DOS Leave these the way they are. Reboot the PC properly. You should now test by doing the following: 1. Open up a DOS Window and PING something. *Note: The NEWT PING utility will NOT work 2. If you can still PING, things should be working. III. Installing Newt 4.6 (as an Agent) for Windows 95 --------------------------------------- Go to START/RUN and run the installation program for Newt. The first screen that pops up mentions the Win95 TCP/IP stack. Just continue on with the installation. For simplicity sake you may just want to install to the default directory (C:\NETMANAG), but this is not required, of course. You now need to configure Newt. You should now test by doing the following: 1. Open up a DOS Window and PING something. *Note: The NEWT PING utility will NOT work 2. If you can still PING, things should be working. 3. Now skip to step IV. Installing the MultiCommManager software and install the software (Keep in mind that in step 2. you would not uncheck the Management Interface Card checkbox (there will be a MIC card in this PC, and instead of switching to Supervisor you would switch to Agent). 4. Now that the Management software is install you should have a Green IP for your local site. 5. Now go to your task bar and click, or restore, the NEWT that is running. 6. Go into SNMP/Trap Administration and type in the IP address of your Supervisor, then click Add. 7. Minimize the Newt, close the MultiCommManager software and reboot the PC once more. 8. Once the PC reboots just go into the Management Software and this should be it. 9. You may have have to close the Management software and bring it back up, on the Supervisor side, if it was up during this install of the Agent. IV. Installing the MultiCommManager software. ------------------------------------------------ 1. Install from floppy or hard drive. 2. Uncheck the Management Interface Card Installed box. (there is no MIC in this PC) 3. After installing MCM you need to change to SNMP Supervisor Mode. 4. Go to SETUP/SNMP/MODE/SUPERVISOR 5. Set the Polling Interval to 1 minute Go to SETUP/SNMP/Polling Interval 6. Open up the Modem Groups Window 7. Highlight the Modem Groups Icon and Click ADD. 8. Put the IP address of your Agent PC (or Ethernet Controller) in the IP fields. 9. Give the Rack Group a Name. 10. Click OK (you cannot set Communities yet) 11. Highlight your new Rack Group 12. Click EDIT. 13. Change the GET and SET Communities to "public" and "public" 14. Click OK. That should be it. Your "IP" icon should turn green within 10-20 seconds. If it doesn't, re-boot the PC and run the Rack Manager software again. You should now be able to simply run the Rack Management software and attach to your rack. You DO NOT need to run any Newt software prior to running the Rack Management software. You should see the Newt program get automatically loaded when you run Rack Management. The strange thing about this setup is that you will never get a Physical Address in Newt, and your Supervisor IP Address that shows up on the Title Bar of the Rack Management software will always be 0.0.0.0. The apparent *trick* here is to make the dummy configuration file in custom. This will set up Newt to run, but will not Bind Newt to your NIC Card. This is OK, because the Microsoft TCP/IP stack has already assigned your PC an IP address and the Traps will be received properly. Trouble-Shooting ---------------- If the IP is not green, be sure to double-check the Agent PC or Ethernet Controller and be sure the Traps are being sent to the IP of the Supervisor PC (check your PC's IP in CONTROL PANEL/NETWORKS). You may want to PING yourself and make sure it works. One Final Note: On one PC that we were testing, we could not get the MCM software to see the rack (the "IP" icon never turned green). We had to completely remove all network drivers in CONTROL PANEL/NETWORK and then reboot. We then simply re-installed the 32-bit NDIS drivers for the NIC, and re-installed the Microsoft TCP/IP protocol. We then followed the exact steps in this text file and it worked.
